Peace" exterior mural at Arts Fifth Avenue
Jo Dufo, a Fort Worth school district
art teacher who offers private classes at Arts Fifth Avenue,
put paintbrushes in the hands of her students this summer and took them
outside. The result
is a gift to the neighborhood and a delight for passing motorists. A large
mural in bright primary
colors shows kids doing kid stuff in safe surroundings - reading, drawing,
holding hands, giggling -
with lots of blue sky, flowers, and green grass. The scenes decorate the
south wall of the funky
music, dance, yoga, and art center that has become a gathering place for
the multi-cultural
denizens of the old and the new South Side. The painting of the mural,
a community arts project
called Kids Painting the Neighborhood Safe, was funded by Samuel's Heart
Auction, the Safe
Cities program, and the Leadership Class at TCU. The three-week painting
process became a
neighborhood event with volunteers mixing paints, keeping the kids fed
and watered, and
organizing cleanup crews. It's graffiti at its best.

FORT WORTH'S MONDO DRUMMERS included in
2005 Macmillan/McGraw Hill Textbook
In 2003, Eddie Dunlap, Artistic Director of MONDO Drummers, received
an unusual phone call
asking questions about his youth performance ensemble. While Eddie receives
inquiries about
MONDO on a regular basis from local schools and libraries, this call was
unusual as it was from
a representative of MacMillan-McGraw Hill (MMH) in New York City regarding
a new textbook series. MMH requested a copy of MONDO's CD, it was a
BIG SKY, after all, and printed information on the history and development
of the group - we sent it overnight, of course - then came the request
for photo images. Fort Worth's own MONDO Drummers were selected and are
included in Macmillan-McGraw Hill's "SPOTLIGHT ON MUSIC" textbook for
Grade 8 (3 photos) and one song from the MONDO CD included on the CD accompanying
the textbook, as well as on an additional audio educational configuration
called Sound Solution. Released in 2005, this textbook/CD series will
be available in all of the United States, Department of Defense Schools,
and in American International and other foreign schools using American
textbooks with an anticipated print run of up to 250,000. Fort Worth has
known them for years - now schoolchildren WORLDWIDE may be able to experience
the energy and music of MONDO Drummers!
